Chicago Search & AI Visibility Study

On September 28, 2026 we ran the same “best ___ near me” search from 49 locations across Chicago for 19 local industries on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, then pulled search demand from Ahrefs. This page is the full write-up, and every industry page on this site cites it.

2,793
AI answers analyzed across 3 AI platforms
84%
of ChatGPT answers cited Yelp
84%
of Google AI Mode answers cited Google business listings
17%
of AI-recommended businesses were named by both ChatGPT and AI Mode

Finding 1

No business owns AI recommendations in any industry we tested

ChatGPT answers change from one neighborhood to the next. Across the 49 locations it named between 100 and 200 different businesses per industry (median 132). The most-named business in each industry appeared in at most 18 of 49 answers, and in a typical industry the leader showed up in only 9.

What it means: there is no single “AI ranking” to win. Visibility is earned neighborhood by neighborhood, which favors businesses with strong local signals in the places AI tools read.

Finding 2

ChatGPT and Google AI Mode build different shortlists

Between them, ChatGPT and Google AI Mode recommended 3,269 different Chicago businesses across 18 industries. Only 545 of them (17%) were recommended by both.

What it means: showing up in one AI tool does not carry over to another. Each one needs its own inputs.

Roofing is excluded because AI Mode business names could not be parsed for that scan. Businesses matched by name after removing punctuation and legal suffixes.

Finding 3

ChatGPT reads directories. Google AI Mode reads Google.

ChatGPT cited Yelp in 779 of 931 answers (84%), and it leaned hard on each industry’s own directories: Psychology Today in all 49 therapist answers, Avvo in 46 of 49 immigration lawyer answers, Zillow in 45 of 49 real estate answers, CarGurus in 47 of 49 car dealership answers. Google AI Mode went the other way. It cited Google’s own business listings in 779 of 931 answers (84%).

What it means: your Google Business Profile now feeds both the map pack and Google’s AI answers, and your directory profiles are part of what ChatGPT reads before it recommends anyone. Complete, accurate, well-reviewed listings are part of your AI visibility.

Finding 4

AI Overviews name businesses for some trades and almost never for others

For “best ___ near me” searches, Google showed an AI Overview that named specific businesses at 407 of 931 locations (44%). It depended heavily on the industry: roofers and real estate agents were named at 48 of 49 locations, while dentists, chiropractors and personal injury lawyers were named at only 2.

What it means: for home services and real estate, the AI Overview is now part of the local results you compete in. For healthcare and injury law, the AI Overview rarely named anyone, so the map pack and organic results carry more of the load.

How much Chicago searches for each service, and when

These counts only include searches that name the city. Searches like “dentist near me” or a plain “dentist” made in Chicago are not in them, so treat each number as a floor. Seasonality is the more useful signal: landscaping, HVAC and plumbing swing hardest, with the busiest month running about 3 times the slowest, which tells you when to have your pages and profiles ready.

Ecommerce: page one is crowded, but stores still win the links that remain

Ecommerce is not a map pack business, so we measured it differently: the first 10 Google results for 20 common product searches (US, Ahrefs). Google showed an AI Overview on 17 of 20 and free product listings on all 20. Only 117 of the first 200 result positions were classic organic links, and 6 of the 20 searches had no organic link in the top 3 at all.

When an organic link did make the top 3, it usually belonged to a store selling its own products: 15 of 17 top-3 organic positions, 12 of them small or independent brands rather than Amazon or big-box retailers.

What it means: product pages and free product listings are where independent stores can still compete. See our ecommerce SEO page.

What to do with this

  1. Treat your Google Business Profile as an AI asset. Google AI Mode cited Google’s listings in most answers. Categories, services, hours, photos and reviews all feed it.
  2. Fix your directory profiles. Find the two or three sites ChatGPT cites for your industry in the table above, then make those profiles complete, accurate and consistent with your website.
  3. Keep earning reviews. They show up in the map pack, the directories and the AI answers that quote them.
  4. Build for neighborhoods, not just “Chicago.” AI answers change from one part of the city to the next.
  5. Measure each AI tool separately. Visibility in one does not predict visibility in another.

Results by industry

Each industry page opens with its own snapshot from this study.

Methodology

All scans ran on September 28, 2026 at about 4:00 PM Central using Local Falcon. Each industry used one query, identical on every platform: “best dentist near me,” “best plumber near me” and so on (for CPAs, “best CPA near me”). Each query ran from the same 49 points, a 7 by 7 grid spaced about 3.3 miles apart and centered at 41.85, -87.68, which covers most of the city. Some eastern points fall over Lake Michigan and some western points fall in the first ring of suburbs; results at those points reflect the nearest neighborhoods.

Platforms: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. A business counts as “recommended” in an answer when the platform named it. Businesses were matched across platforms by name after removing punctuation, “&” versus “and,” legal suffixes and the word Chicago, which is conservative and can miss a match when names differ.

Search demand comes from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer (United States), using each term’s 12-month average monthly volume and 24 months of monthly history. The ecommerce section uses Ahrefs SERP data for 20 product searches in the United States.

Limitations. This is one day of data, and AI answers change often. We also ran Gemini, but at many Chicago locations those scans returned businesses in Europe, so we excluded Gemini rather than publish unreliable numbers. For roofing, AI Mode answers were collected but business names could not be parsed, so roofing is left out of the AI Mode comparisons. Ahrefs volumes are estimates. None of this measures which business is best, only which business each platform recommended.

Frequently asked questions

How did you collect the data?
We used Local Falcon to run the same search from 49 points across Chicago on each platform on one afternoon, then downloaded every answer and the businesses and sources in it. Search volumes come from Ahrefs.
Why "best ___ near me" searches?
It is how people ask AI tools for a recommendation, and it is a common Google search too. Using one phrasing everywhere keeps the platforms comparable.
Why is Gemini not included?
Our Gemini scans returned businesses outside the United States at many Chicago locations. That points to a data collection problem rather than what a Chicago user would see, so we left Gemini out rather than publish unreliable numbers.
Will you update the study?
Yes. AI answers move fast, so we plan to rerun it and date every update on this page.
Can I use these numbers?
Yes. Please cite "Chicago SEO Consultant, Chicago Search & AI Visibility Study (September 2026)" and link to this page.
