The Challenge
Down To Earth Landscaping is a landscape supply company serving Barrington, IL and the surrounding northwest Chicago suburbs. The business had a strong local reputation built over decades — homeowners and contractors knew the quality of their bulk mulch, topsoil, and materials — but their online presence wasn't doing justice to that reputation. Competitors with weaker supply operations were ranking above them for the searches their customers were actually running: 'bulk mulch near me,' 'landscape supply Barrington,' 'topsoil delivery northwest suburbs.' When the phone rang, it was often someone who had found them by word of mouth, not search.
A second, more concrete problem had been festering on the site for months: a mulch calculator the previous developer had built was completely broken. The tool was supposed to help homeowners figure out how many cubic yards of mulch they needed for their planting beds — a genuinely useful resource that reduces friction and helps customers arrive at the purchase decision before ever calling. Instead, it threw errors, displayed nonsensical results, and had a mobile experience that made it nearly impossible to use on a phone. For a business where customers are often standing in their yard trying to estimate material quantities, a broken calculator was an embarrassing dead end rather than a useful selling tool.
On top of that, there was no connection between the calculator and the business's WooCommerce store. Even if a customer worked out how much mulch they needed, there was no path to actually ordering it online. The purchasing experience was disconnected, adding unnecessary friction to what should be a seamless journey from estimation to checkout.
The Approach
We started with a comprehensive local SEO strategy designed for a suburban landscape supplier's specific market. That meant fully claiming and optimizing the Google Business Profile with accurate service categories, photos of the yard and materials, seasonal posts, and a consistent review generation process so prospective customers saw a business that looked as credible online as it was in person. We ran a citation audit across local business directories, correcting inconsistencies in the business name, address, and phone number that quietly suppress local rankings. Citation consistency is unglamorous work, but it is foundational for appearing in the map pack, which is where customers searching for bulk materials on mobile actually look first.
We built out targeted content around the keywords Down To Earth Landscaping's customers were actually searching: delivery areas by suburb, material guides explaining the difference between mulch types and depths, seasonal buying guides, and an FAQ section covering the questions their staff answered on the phone every day. This content cluster built topical authority around landscape supply in the northwest suburbs and kept the site relevant through every Google algorithm update across three years of engagement.
On the technical side, we fixed the crawlability and indexation issues that were keeping pages from ranking, improved Core Web Vitals scores so the mobile experience met Google's performance expectations, and implemented structured data for the local business and its services.
The calculator rebuild was a project of its own. We inherited the broken tool, diagnosed the failures, and rebuilt it from scratch to be genuinely useful on any device. The new version allows customers to add multiple planting areas, choose their shape (rectangle or circle), enter dimensions in feet, and specify depth in inches, with on-screen guidance reminding them that existing beds need 2-3 inches while new beds need 3-4. The results screen shows total cubic yards needed alongside a visual representation — wheelbarrow loads and bag equivalents — so the number is tangible rather than abstract. Critically, we connected the calculator directly to the WooCommerce store, so the path from 'I need 4.55 cubic yards of mulch' to 'I'll add it to my cart and place the order' became frictionless and fully self-serve.
Built and shipped
A look at what we actually delivered — not just the strategy, but the product.

Three years of consistent SEO turned a hidden gem of a landscape supplier into the busiest they've ever been. The calculator was the cherry on top — we inherited a broken tool, rebuilt it so a homeowner could actually use it on their phone, and connected it straight to WooCommerce. Now it drives orders.
"We've been doing this for a long time and the past few years have been our best. The SEO work brought in customers who found us online for the first time, and the new calculator made it easy for them to figure out exactly what they needed and order it without having to call. It just works."
